Feel and Release in the Round Pen

 

In Montana, Leslie showed us some ways she uses feel and release in the round pen. It was refreshing to watch.

Leslie was never in the center except to pass through on occasion, and there was no pressure directed towards any of the three very different colts at any time. Instead Leslie simply started running along the perimeter track, with strong intent about the path she planned to travel. She did not look at the colts, just focused on her plan to run the fence. The colts life came up to get off her path. She just kept going as they left; the colts curiosity turned them and they ended up following her on the circle. She continued to lead. Then in a move that did not involve turning to face them, or directing her energy towards them, but rather a slowing of her own motor, a rock back onto her hips and a glance of concern sideways towards the fence, all the colts peeled off and moved freely across the circle to change directions.

If they did not follow her, she followed them, but at a slightly slower pace, no drive. Allow them to lead until they follow. They got curious about Leslie following, turned to look, she kept moving at the same pace again along the perimeter and ended up in front as they curved around to follow. The point was to teach the colts to lead at liberty by teaching them that they could follow confidently without her turning around and driving them in some way.

Very soon, these colts were utterly drawn to Leslie, minds fully engaged. She finished by releasing the colts off the fence to the center of the pen and, while she was still near the perimeter, cut her motor, turned to direct clear intent straight across the round pen, perhaps 10ft in front of the colts. All three colts stopped, engaged, balanced, and rather proud of themselves, in a row in the center. She stayed roughly where she was, about 25 ft away (100ft round pen) and asked them to lower their heads all the way to the ground and relax.

And one by one, they did.
