Special Coaching with Karen Musson
Your Level, Your Focus, Your Speed

What is your horsemanship goal...? What's your dream...?
What keeps you up at night...? What’s true for you?

questionboxJ25 Does your sensitive horse get tense at times?

questionboxJ25 Does your confident horse get resentful at times?

questionboxJ25 Does your horse seem to be “going through the motions”?

questionboxJ25 Do you keep revisiting the same challenge?

questionboxJ25 Do you sometimes feel like you are "confronting" your horse when things get challenging?

questionboxJ25 Do you doubt that you are a genuine "Alpha" or “boss” at heart (and your horse knows it)?

What if you could take your horsemanship skill to where it is not necessary to "push through" the brace? What if solving a challenge not only feels good to both of you in the process, but also adds trust and meaning to the partnership as a direct result?

Immersion Weekend - 4 Rider Limit

How Does Your Horse Rate Your Feel?
Add More Flow to Your Partnership Experience

"Your horse can’t offer what you don’t give" Karen Musson

Make a quantum leap in how your horse rates your Feel to unlock your next level of partnership. Understand the Facets of Flow and how to apply a collection of small, practical changes that will have a big impact on your horse, your training and your results.

Here we go now:

SATURDAY: Fuel for a Fast Start!
"It's not the little things, it's the Big things IN the little things!" Bid Webb (student)

What does your lead-line mean in terms of true Feel, from your horse’s point of view? How does this relate to your reins? Four distinct types of Feel occur in your lead-line and reins. Each one directly impacts your horse’s posture, balance and quality of movement. Learn the differences, how to apply them on the ground and under saddle, so you can ensure you support your training from the stable to the mounting block as well as during your ride!

By the end of Day 1, you will be practicing a collection of small changes that will have a big impact on your horse's capacity to be mentally and emotionally available, while helping him move gracefully and remain at ease.

SUNDAY: Foot Flow Matters
“We are talking about the actual facts about horses" Bill Dorrance

Have you ever wondered why there is such a long list of common complaints? For example:

  • My horse feels stiff to the right
  • My horse feels heavy to the left
  • We have trouble with canter departs or maintaining the canter Why does my horse go too fast?
  • Why won’t my horse go faster?
  • Why does my horse buck?

A BIG reason for this is the influence we have on Foot Flow without true awareness! The flow of your horse’s feet taps right into his instincts, holding deep meaning for him, so guiding this through feel can be so very useful! Foot placement is also a key influence on his posture and shape, which determine the quality of his next maneuver. Learn why guiding Foot Flow can improve your timing by 75%, manage the feel of the connection as well as speed – and it’s NOT rocket science!

By the end of Day 2, you will have gained the skill to carry feel through to the feet in easy increments and in a way that has natural meaning for your horse.

What students are saying:

MaryEllenLg1

SusanLg1

BevLg3

If, as master horseman Bill Dorrance said “It’s in a horse’s nature to get along” why do so many horses resent their rider’s efforts at times, or stay tense, get lazy or seem indifferent?

We will be exploring what no-one is talking about – because it is so “normal” – and going deeper into what we can do together to move beyond “normal” so we can refine the value we bring to our equine partnership and heighten our mutual enjoyment!

Registration OPEN - First come, First Served

Nov 20 - Jan 20, 2018 On-line Video Coaching Program with Karen Musson - Deepen Your Skill

November 20, 2017 - January 20, 2018

Refine Your Feel One-on-one Coaching Program
Deepen Your Skill - Winter 2017 Session
"Because there's always more..."

Winter? Holiday buzz and parties?
Give yourself a litte quality time
with your horse this season!
He'll be grateful :)
(Ready to register? Click here)

Enjoy a series of one-on-one video consultations with Karen
to help guide your journey forward,
for Your horse, Your horsemanship
at Your Speed

This is a special program for those of you I've met in my travels, who are asking "How can I work with you more?". I'm so grateful to have "connected" with you and want to offer you an opportunity for us to do that.

The intention of this program is to serve you on your horsemanship journey in a way that best fits your goals, vision or simply the "mystery" of where the path leads next!

We are talking of course about (forever) Refining our Feel in terms of inspiring a better (or even better) connection with our horses - whatever we happen to be doing... from hanging out together to addressing a very real challenge.

What does "true unity" mean to you?
How do you walk (trot or canter :) ) that pathway?

Is it really true unity in a partnership if "submission" is involved (on either side!)? Or if we are always "marking" in some way when the horse is "right" (what do those momentary marks of "right" imply - to our horses - the rest of the time)? I learned so very much of value from the more widely used methods... it's just that there is more... so much more.

questionboxJ25 What if we could do away with the need for judicious "escalation of pressure" as an incentive - assuming, we had a different way to express clarity?

questionboxJ25 What if our own Feel were more of an incentive in itself than food rewards?

questionboxJ25 What if your horse consistently chose to drop into Flow with you, because it feels good to do that - instead of because it avoids discomfort or might win a food reward. And that within your Flow you are able to shape your moves together with ease because your Feel, Timing and technique relative to Balance go through his body to his feet - in a way that has real meaning for him - and lead the dance from that mutual connection?

questionboxJ25 What if you could reliably resolve challenges in a way that adds to the partnership? Because there will always be challenges, small or large that show up. What if challenges actually felt like (as opposed to telling ourselves they are) glorious opportunities, because you know that achieving the "shift" you will inspire in your horse to overcome the challenge will not feel like correction or confrontation - it will bring you to a new depth of mutual trust and understanding?

If any of these are interesting to you, The Feel of Release may be the next layer of understanding and powerfully empowering technique on Your Horsemanship pathway.

4 x one-on-one consultations, scheduled between November 20, 2017 - January 20, 2018

Recording a video clip for me to see is the best way to get the most out of these sessions. However! If you shake at the thought of technology, you can still participate in the old fashioned audio only (a.k.a phone) style - though, I do ask that you email, post or share a link to photos of you and your horse to introduce yourselves, as a minimum. I have found that when I work with trainers in particular (though not limited to trainers!), their observations are often extremely accurate and descriptive, so video may not be necessary every time - we can decide that together along the way.

More on What to Expect from Karen:

Karen Musson is known for her warm, light-hearted way of coaching horsemen/women in the refinement of feel. She guides you to expand on the idea of an intermittent, conditonal feel of release to an ongoing feel of release that develops an open flow in your connection. Karen will show you the direct line to an ease and depth of connection you know exists... yet which might seem to come and go at times, feel fleeting or be right at your finger tips then sometimes escape your grasp. "Feel" is not exclusive or reserved for the advanced or masterful rider - it is universal. It is also the art of not tripping ourselves up as a result of a collection of common practices that unwittingly get in our way. All it really takes is gaining the awareness that fuels taking our horsemanship a little deeper in understanding of "the inner workings" of a prey animal - so we can shift from a dominant approach that promotes brace first, followed by submission, to leading from the "the higher road" of connection first to bring an offer of mind, engine and feet more readily to the hand, in unity.

"Feel is the direct line to the whole horse: refining your feel takes the connection you have with your horse to new heights. Enjoy!"

"FEEL, TIMING and BALANCE: Sometimes it's best to talk about feel, timing and balance separately, and to learn how to apply each thing separately on the start. But when you go to apply these three things a little later on in your training, then you see that each of these things supports the other. They are interconnected and all three are important. If one is missing, there's sure to be a poor effect on the other two. The main one you need to have in there when you ride is balance. Without that you'd fall off your horse just as soon as you got up on him"

Bill Dorrance

Join Karen as she guides you through how to Refine Your Feel.

Follow Karen's step-by-step approach to set the course for a thoroughly uplifting true connection that is both real and one you can rely on to reach your horse when things aren't so smooth.

Events offer a low-key, friendly, fun, inspirational and often deeply touching experience.

Events offer a low-key, friendly, fun, inspirational and often deeply touching experience, while exploring in depth such topics as:

1. What is “feel” anyway? Isn’t it what we do naturally? Don’t I already use “feel”?

2. The common thread to every challenge - whether a minor ‘moment’ between you and your horse, a slight inconsistency that is on your mind or the immense frustration of hard work yielding slow progress, or perhaps an unsettling ‘trigger’ that lurks in a horse or rider, rooted in a fall, bad experience or is just a mystery.

3. The one thing that will ALWAYS release your horse’s mind to you, and how to do it.

4. How and why does our "clear intent" and its associated Feel play a defining role in the connection between you and your horse?

5. Refine Your Feel - as in, how do *you* do this with *your* horse?

Whether you want to "just" find your flow out on the trail, bust open the door to master your real competitive potential

"I see an 'opening' as anything that allows us to help guide, however briefly, an individual in the direction we ultimately would like to go. An 'opening' can be, and often is, a very subtle form of communication between horse and rider that can easily slip past us if we're not paying attention. 'Openings' can and do work both ways. [...] It amazes me just how small an 'opening' can actually be, whether working with horses or with people, and how easy it can be to create an 'opening' when one is needed."

Mark Rashid

"I truly believe developing the ability to see and use 'openings' effectively is only one piece of what one might refer to as the 'harmony in horsemanship' puzzle. When this idea of understanding 'openings' is brought together with the understanding of two other simlar ideas - making a connection with another indvidual, and the role distance plays in overall communication - I believe it is then that harmony in horsemanship becomes a much less daunting concept for us."

"Bill knew about a place I did not know existed, or could exist, between a horse and a human being [...] Bill included each one of my horses in that information exchange. Over the course of many months,... he took each one by its lead rope and, later, by the bridle reins. Using what he called his 'better feel', Bill showed me and each of them exactly what he meant by what he did [...] It was not long after I made the switch from force when needed (often) to always customizing the feel I offered to a horse, that two tough horses I had misunderstood for years developed into my most reliable mounts."

Leslie Desmond

The lightest hands carry intent that is recognized instantly by the horse, as seen in the maneuvers he chooses to make with his feet. Whether that horse is ridden or handled, the lightest hands can purposefully influence the speed, direction and sequence of each foot with accuracy, in a manner that is reflected in the horse's body and on his face.

"The Real Masters Understood Feel [...] For example, De Kerbrech, (French officer in the cavalry of Napoleon III) really understood horses. He had it fixed up so the horse could succeed. [...] The first time I read Beudant's book was in the 1950s. The way he explained things, there was no doubt in my mind about what a person needed to do to get these little things working for them and their horse."

Bill Dorrance

“Feel, timing and balance: sometimes it’s best to talk about feel, timing and balance separately, and to learn how to apply each thing separately on the start. But when you apply these three things a little later in your training, then you see that each one of these things supports the other. They are interconnected and all three are real important. You really can’t get along without all three.”

Faverot de Kerbrech
